Network architecture utilizes embedded network intelligence that enables service providers to design entirely new optical service portfolios. Carriers need new services to differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive market.
Commodity pricing of traditional telecommunications services is forcing the move to value added services. In addition, competition is putting pressure on traditional pricing structures. IP voice transmission looms in the near term, creating further changes in markets.
New tools include virtual fiber and dialed optical capacity. OC-48 and OC-192 wavelength services leverage transparent service multiplexing technology. OC-3 and OC-12 wave services are cost-effective through the high-speed transport of signals. Payload and overhead are leveraged on a single wavelength. Service providers are able to offer seamless delivery of virtual dedicated fiber using DWDM systems.
The shift in service providers network is toward open systems.
Metro access networks can be based on 30 to 50 Cisco optical platforms arranged on multiple dark fiber.
Optical networking permits implementation of a range of intelligent network configurations and different applications. Industry specific applications can be implemented. Optical networks permit deploying systems that permit processing an online transaction volume six times larger than 2001 traffic loads.
DWDM market applications relate to backbone traffic and voice. Industry specific applications can be implemented.
Voice backbone DWDM applications representing 45% of the market in 2000 decline to 40% in 2001, and 13% in 2006.
